Exhibiting artist, Kelly Lu, will guide visitors through her new works in ‘Kelly Lu’s WAR!’ this Saturday (June 4) at 2PM. Arrive early for a refreshing beverage from 1:30 – 2PM.
My works are a reflection of myself and a sense of displacement that’s accumulated during my time in a place that is supposed to be called home. They are also my critique on the Western stereotype of viewing the East Asian woman as dainty, meek, and submissive and rebelling against society’s harmful generalizations through an ironic and almost ridiculous way.
Although I keep my artwork playful, they are about serious flaws in society about race and sex. Being a minority and also a woman in the South, my entire life has been based on these two factors alone. Little to no representation and a sense of alienation has only been further emphasized by growing up in a predominantly white area and whether that has affected me negatively or positively, it has made me who I am today. – Kelly Lu
