Two Dealers, One Artist?
Is joint representation the best option for artists late in their career? For artists like Frank Stella and Carolee Schneeman, with large bodies of work, all signs point to yes. Joint representation allows for artists to have access to multiple customer bases in the same city, offering maximum exposure and the opportunity to show a variety of different styles of work. However, for mid-career artists who need more individual attention in order to develop their career and cultivate their collector base, it seems that maintaining a close relationship with a sole gallery is still the best way to ensure that all involved are working toward the same vision. With ever-expanding options for artists, including commercial galleries, artist collectives, online galleries, and joint representation, the business of art is constantly evolving to suit the needs of the artist, the customer, and the gallery.
